Catch-Up: A Rule That Makes Service Sports More Competitive
Mehmet Ismail, Maastricht University
Service sports include tennis, volleyball, badminton, and squash. Steven Brams, Mehmet Ismail, Marc Kilgour, and Walter Stromquist propose a ‘Catch-Up Rule’ that is designed to make sports more competitive—and more thrilling for spectators. The Catch-Up Rule gives the serve to the player who has lost the previous point—as opposed to the player who won the previous point, as under the presently used Standard Rule.
